Understanding Diesel and Petrol Additives

The offer itself is NOT crazy, it just sounds like it is. What would be crazy would be to ignore it.

Let me explain….

If you are running a vehicle and you regularly use the cheapest fuel available to you that just about passes the minimum EU standards for petrol or diesel you are not maximising the full amount of energy the fuel contains. This is not really open to debate this is a fact. The Oil Majors spend vast sums of money working with specialist additive companies to ensure that their retail fuel operates a higher standard than the minimum; they honestly do not waste money; their shareholders would push back if they were knowingly wasting hard earned profits.

All retail fuels are not equal, they all meet the minimum standards whether you buy from a leading oil company or from a budget supermarket. The fuels without extra additive will allow your vehicle to work but over time they become less efficient as debris builds up in the fuel system. As the debris increases the vehicles performs less well and the energy from the fuel is not burn efficiently. This increases the emissions and in turn damages the environment more than it should.

Petrol vehicle owners have a simple choice to make. They either buy more expensive fuel treated with additives at a premium branded service station or they go to a budget service station or supermarket, pay less, and buy no additives. For drivers of a diesel car the options are in line with those open to the petrol owner. The difference in buying the 2 options may be around 1 or 2p or 1 to 2 Eurocents per litre purchased. Not dramatic but a 50-litre fuelling can cost up to £1 or €1 more.

So how do we get the £300 return and the emissions savings?

Well, this offer is really only open to companies or individuals who have access to the ‘spot’ fuel markets. Such companies usually buy a tanker of diesel and they can pay around 4p per litre less than even the budget service stations sell at. Most European service stations make only 4 – 5p or eurocents per litre sold!

So, if you are one of the companies or individuals who has access to storing diesel fuel you can take advantage of this offer.

Diesel fuel in the UK, and I assume in Europe too, is rising in price; £1.49 and higher currently per Litre for branded diesel fuel. £1.48 for supermarket fuel. Spot fuel is roughly 4p cheaper so £1.44, add on 1p to buy a diesel additive direct from Shrieve means you pay £1.45 to buy diesel that is treated with additive, this treated diesel should give you a 3% improvement in miles / Kms driven and all for a 2-3p or eurocents reduction in costs against a non-treated fuel. The £300 return is simply an expansion of the savings made by spending 1p per litre on a diesel additive. Throw in the emissions reductions that the additive can achieve, and the offer is making sense!

We all accept that in the future diesel fuel will be replaced, probably by Hydrogen for trucks, but whilst the scientists conduct and perfect that technology, we must live with what we have and for the large bus and truck world this has to be diesel. So if we must use diesel surely we should use it as efficiently as possible especially when the extra efficiency actually cause less environmental damage and saves you money.

In summary, a 3 for 1 financial return and a reduction in the nasties emitted by the trucks exhaust system.
