BIO-ADD® DRILLING MUD EMULSIFIERS
Water is an important component of an oil-based drilling fluid (commonly called an oil-based mud (OBM)). Emulsifiers are widely used to create invert emulsion fluids (to form a water-in-oil emulsion). These emulsifiers can incorporate a water phase inside the OBM, typically in a range of 10%-35% water-in-oil, and up to a maximum of a 50% water fraction.
Shrieve's BIO-ADD® emulsifiers (primary and secondary) are used in both oil-based and synthetic-based fluids to help form a stable water-in-oil emulsion. The base fluid and emulsifier blend provide the foundation to build a drilling fluid (mud) system with additions of gellants, wetting agents, fluid-loss additives, salts, and typically lime for alkalinity.
Emulsified oil muds offer improvement over standard water-based muds in the areas of increased drilling rate and bit life, reduction in hole problems, reduction of torque, less sticking of pipe, and less hole enlargement. OBM can also be recycled and reused from one well to the next.
Not all emulsifiers are the same: Shrieve supply a range of emulsifiers suitable for invert muds, from a standard mineral oil formulation, through EU REACH-compliant products, synthetic-based mud systems, and including a high performance emulsifier, BIO-ADD 733, that is designed for fluids used in high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) environments.
A surfactant, based on an ether of carboxylic acid, that functions as a nitrogen-free emulsifier for oil-based and synthetic-based drilling muds. It has high-temperature stability, above 450°F (232°C), and low toxicity.
A formulated fatty acid amide derivative used as a secondary emulsifier for use in oil-based (and synthetic-based) muds. BIO-ADD 5052 to enhances the emulsion stability when used with BIO-ADD 6068 primary emulsifier. This secondary emulsifier is readily dispersible in all base oils and contributes to reduced fluid loss control in invert fluid systems.
A secondary emulsifier formulated to enhance the performance of BIO-ADD 6067 primary emulsifier. It is readily dispersible in all base oils and creates strong emulsions with high voltage stability in invert fluid systems.
A primary emulsifier used in oil-based (or synthetic-based) drilling muds. This product provides stable emulsions at temperature above 204°C (400°F) and resistance to contamination while maintaining good fluid loss properties in the mud. System performance is enhanced when used with the secondary emulsifier BIO-ADD 6065.
A formulated amide for use as a primary emulsifier in oil-based drilling muds. This product provides stable emulsions with temperature stability and resistance to contamination while maintaining good fluid loss properties in the mud. System performance is enhanced when used together with the secondary emulsifier BIO-ADD 5052.
